Britannia, year 54 BC. The shadow of Rome is looming but has not yet reached the island’s shores. The indigenous tribes, completely unaware of the threat that will soon disrupt their lives forever, fight and trade among themselves, competing for the coveted role of Verrix, the Celtic King of Kings.

Verrix, which in ancient Gaelic means King of Kings, is a management board game, strategic, with a strong historical character, with high interaction between players, asymmetrical and with the main mechanic of card-driven, hand-management and a small component of deck building.

Set in the Britannia of 54 B.C., the player finds himself ruling a Celtic tribe with the aim of achieving as much fame as possible over 8 turns and 4 holidays.
There are several ways to score points.

You can acquire them by playing certain Action Cards that reflect the specific “Celtic” characteristic of your tribe, or by winning the favour of the Gods on the 4 major festivals of the Celtic calendar, or by winning “honourable” battles.

Each player will have different characteristics according to the type of tribe he decides to use at the beginning of the game and during the game, you can increase the population and the number of Action Cards in their possession.

The history of the project

In the beginning, it was Celtic, because it was generically about Celtic tribes. The game was a management game with an interactive exploration hexagonal map where you could expand your village to produce resources, perform sacred rituals, trade, and participate in raids and battles. Resources were plentiful and quest cards guided the game.

Then it becameYnis Prydainbecause it dealt with the Celtic tribes of theIsle of the Degrees in Britain. The game was management, very historical, and with a static map where you could expand your village to produce more resources, perform sacred rituals, trade, and participate in raids and battles. Quest cards always guided the game, Characters gave a main trait to the tribes and a table of Events deepened the management of sacred rites.

Finally, it became Verrix, because it focuses on the quest for Fame, which was very important for the Celts. The game is managerial, very historical, and with a static map where you place your villages and manage your movements. Action cards guide the game and allow you to produce a limited number of resources, perform sacred rituals, trade, and participate in raids and battles. Characters can grow and the Event card deck definitively incorporates the importance of the Divine Will.

The evolution lasted almost 5 years, but after many tests, discussions, and balances we are satisfied to have created a very historical asymmetrical management game, where each player can organize his own strategy always taking into account the choices of the other players.

The strong interaction between players makes for a very stimulating and long-lasting gaming experience and our work has been going in this direction since the first version!

The future of the project

Herman Hesse said:

โ€œYou must find your dream… but no dream lasts forever, each dream is followed by another, and one should not cling to any particular dream. โ€œ.

Verrixis our first step, but we have other ideas that we would like to turn into new dreams and into reality!

That’s why we already have in the pipeline a small expansion for the 2-player game that introduces an automaton tribe that can win the game and another, more complex expansion that introduces the “sixth” player.

We have deliberately excluded the colour red because we have always associated it with the Romans. In this case, it will be an expansion that brings asymmetry in asymmetry, having the Romans player different modalities and objectives of victory from those of the Celtic tribes.

Verrix is also available on the Tabletopia platform in full form and totally free of charge.
